Beneficiando do distanciamento do seu olhar face à realidade do trânsito em Portugal, a socióloga Hélène Fretigné apresenta-nos a história da transformação, pela autarquia lisboeta, de uma praça acolhedora em inóspito local de passagem, e analisa detalhadamente as tensões, os riscos e os conflitos de uso que opõem peões a automobilistas, ambos reclamando o seu direito a esse território alcatroado.
O livro divide-se em duas partes:
A primeira parte é uma análise histórica da evolução da praça no contexto do desenvolvimento urbanístico novecentista das Av. Novas, e a polémica da demolição do Monumental, nos anos oitenta, quando a autarquia lisboeta prometeu aos munícipes a “devolução da praça aos peões”.
A segunda parte analisa a situação actual da praça, feita de agressão contínua aos peões nas suas tentativas de a atravessar, agressão essa em que a CML tem responsabilidade, já que autorizou, a partir dos anos oitenta, a construção de 3 centros comerciais cortados por uma via rápida, e não oferece aos cidadãos condições de travessia confortável e segura, e muito menos disponibiliza as condições para o usufruto condigno do equipamento urbano que é uma praça central da cidade.

Sinopse : Em plena II Guerra Mundial, o duque D. Duarte Nuno de Bragança decidiu casar com uma princesa brasileira. Para esse casamento, os monárquicos portugueses resolveram pedir o apoio do Estado português a Salazar. E este, depois de algumas dúvidas e hesitações, decidiu satisfazer o pedido e patrocinar a união dos dois ramos da Casa de Bragança. Salazar percebera a utilidade do seu envolvimento político nesta união. Julgava que ganharia alguma coisa com ele no plano diplomático, reforçando a aliança entre Portugal e o Brasil - e também o seu projecto de criação de um bloco cristão e neutral, que representasse uma terceira via entre os Aliados e as potências do Eixo. Nesse campo, nada ganhou. Em contrapartida, descobriu que, ao patrocinar o matrimónio do duque de Bragança, o furtara aos seus partidários, apropriando-se dele para os fins políticos que tivesse por convenientes na conjuntura da época.
